As a children’s author, I specialise in books for young children. I often write in rhyme, and aim to make sure that every story bounces along with plenty of humour, so the books are fun for adults to read aloud too. I find that bigger children take great delight in books of this type, too, even though they are supposedly “too old” for them...

I love the fact that rhyme and rhythm – which build on long and powerful traditions of oral storytelling – are still so effective today, making stories a pleasure to listen to and remember. Settling down with a good book in a warm lap encourages even the youngest children to develop good social communication skills, and helps to prepare them for the day when they will become young readers (and writers) themselves.

The Bedtime Princess, first published in hardback in 2007, is now out in a soft-back format. Princess Tilly is a capricious but charismatic minor royal who just won't go to sleep! And the book comes complete with gold tassels...
